Miss Jessie McMillan, known to every person in the area who dealt at the Fort Calhoun Post Office, died last Tuesday evening of a heart attack at her home in Fort Calhoun. It was reported that Jessie had experienced failing health in recent years.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church. Graveside services were held at the Fort Calhoun cemetery.

Miss McMillan was a life-long resident of Fort Calhoun born here July 25, 1910. Jessie was graduated from the Ft. Calhoun High School in 1928.

Jessie became something of a newspaper woman while she lived with the Frank Adams family. She worked on the Fort Calhoun Chronicle, setting type, doing make-up work, and many of the other tasks necessary in a small town paper with Editor Adams.

Jessie was appointed Post Mistress of the Fort Calhoun Post Office in 1946 and held that position until the time of her death. Jessie was a familiar face in the Post Office and her sprightly spirit and helpful attitude she brought to her work will be missed very much by all.

Jessie wasn’t known as well for her work on the newspaper and in the Post Office as she was for her kindness towards people. She was able to find something enjoyable to laugh about at any and all times. One person remarked, “you could always hear Jessie laughin’ on a warm summer evening while she was sitting on the Post Office steps. You could hear her laugh all over town.” Jessie was a lover of animals too. She would seldom be seen without her dog or cat.

Survivors of Miss McMillan are two sisters, Mrs. Jane Suverkrubbe and Mrs. Dorothy Froehlich, of Fort Calhoun, and a brother, Mr. Neal McMillan, of Dodge City, Kansas.

Pallbearers for the service were: Bill Kay, Bill Suverkrubbe, Fred Prochnow, Walter Kruse, Denton Nelson, and Max Jipp. The Sievers Funeral Home of Fort Calhoun was in charge of the services.
