Elmer O. Sheets, 93

Elmer O. Sheets, 93, of Tekamah, died Thursday, May 14, 2009, at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah.

Interment will be in the Tekamah Cemetery with military honors by VFW Bataan Post No. 3304 and American Legion LaFrenz Post No. 15.

Visitation began Monday but will also be held at the church on Tuesday, one hour prior to the service.

Elmer Olin Sheets was born Dec. 28, 1915, in Herman to Daniel and Lucy (Kimball) Sheeets. He attended school in Herman and graduated from Herman High School in 1934.

On Nov. 5, 1938, he married Malay De Modlin in Mount Ayr, Iowa. They were the parents of three children: Elmer Jr., Kaye and Sharon.

Mr. Sheets served in the U.S. Army from January 1944 until honorably discharged in October 1945. He was a truck driver while in Europe.

He started working for Tekseed Hybrid Company in 1946 and retired in 1977. Prior to that, he was a gasoline transport driver.

He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah and a life-member of the VFW Bataan Post No. 3304 in Tekamah. He enjoyed fishing, camping and especially his family.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Kaye and Kenny Kleen and Sharon and Jon Mitchell, all of Tekamah; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Dorathy Metzler, Blair; nieces and nephews; special friends, Lonnie and Shirley Giles of Tekamah.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Malay; son, Elmer, Jr.; grandson, Todd Sheets; five brothers and five sisters.

Memorials are suggested to the VFW and American Legion, Emmanuel Lutheran Church and Tekamah Rescue Squad.

Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah is in charge of arrangements.
