Gerald A. Sheets, 86
Washington County native Gerald A. Sheets, 86, of Fremont, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at Arbor Manor in Fremont.
The funeral service was Thursday, March 20 at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont. Interment was in Ridge Cemetery with military honors by the Fremont Honor Guard of the American Legion Post 20 and VFW Post 854.
Gerald A. Sheets was born June 10, 1921, in Herman to Will and Mabel (Lund) Sheets. He grew up in the Herman and Blair are.
He served in the United States Army from July of 1942 to November of 1945. He was a medic with the rank of Corporal T5 in the 10th Mountain Division and saw duty in Italy and in the Aleutian Islands.
On Dec. 15, 1945, he married Mildred Lass in Marysville, Kan. They lived in several communities in this area, including Tekamah and Fremont. Mr. Sheets had worked as a farmhand, and in construction. Then he went to work for the Fremont Department of Utilities as a yardman and maintenance mechanic, retiring after 23 years there.
He was a member of Fremont’s VFW Post 854.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Althea and Denny Decker of Arlington and Denny Decker of Arlington and Phyllis and Bill Green of Fremont; one son, Garry Sheets of Fremont; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren ; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Xona Groves of Blair and Loretta and Kenny Kleckner of North Bend; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Wilford and Darlene Sheets of Fremont, Milford and Ramona Sheets of Versailles, Mo., and LeRoy and Alice Sheets of Central City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, in January of 2007; and also by an infant son; five sisters and two brothers.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
