Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Cliff Table Cemetery west of Merna.

Dwana Madge Hircock was born April 19, 1929, in the Township of Kilfoil, west of Merna, to William and Madge Hircock.

She attended Sunshine Country School, Ortello School, Merna High School and graduated from Sargent High School in 1947.

On June 3, 1951, she married Kenneth Poland at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Taylor. They farmed north of Sargent, making their first home in a sod-house from March 1952 to August 1956, when her husband started working for United Airlines as an airline mechanic in the San Francisco, Calif., area.

In October 1959, they returned back to the Omaha area for her husband's job with United Airlines. In 1974, the couple and their family moved back to San Bruno, Calif., for Mr. Poland's job.

As a teen, she made a personal decision to trust Jesus Christ as her Savior, a decision that would affect the rest of her life. She was active in her church, serving on numerous boards as well as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was also involved in the children's school activities, and also worked at the San Mateo County School district in California as a recess monitor and a marching band line mom. She was a Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls leader in Omaha and a Brownie leader in San Bruno.

She was a loving mother who was devoted to her children and grandchildren, often spending weeks visiting, especially after the birth of a grandchild. She spent many summers taking vacations and trips with her family to visit other family members, and enjoyed those trips greatly. Her love of travel continued when her husband retired and they took numerous trips, many to Alaska. After his death in April 1992, Mrs. Poland continued to travel and make family visits part of her travel routine, serving as family photographer and historian.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Martin and Sue Poland of Omaha and Gary and Karen Poland of Millbrae, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jon Rittenhouse of Highland, Calif., and Julie and Bryan Augsburger of Orlando, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Della Narducci, Sacramento, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Laurel Poland of Sargent, and Evelyn and Earl Dawson of Visalia, Calif.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, George, Francis, Raymond Wesley, and Donald; and sisters, Louise Seevers, Lucille Hircock and Ruby Durham.

Memorials are suggested to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Foundation, Good Shepherd Lutheran Home, or Odyssey Hospice.
