Piper, Ida M. (Stevens)

Dies of Typhoid

After five weeks of untold suffering of typhoid in which all but the last few hours were spent in a semi-comatose condition, the death angel called the spirit of Mrs. Ida M. Stevens Piper to its heavenly home at 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 5. Mrs. Piper five weeks ago came to Blair and buried the body of her husband in the Blair cemetery and while here was stricken with this dread disease but returned to her family home at Walthill and was immediately taken to her bed from which she never arose. At the present time two of her children lie critically ill at the Walthill home of the same disease but with little hopes of recovery.

Ida M. Stevens was born in Blair December 25, 1871, and grew to womanhood in this community, where all but the past two years she has lived. On August 4, 1887, she was married to Adam Piper and to them eleven children were born, eight of whom are living.

Deceased was a daughter of Mrs. Mary Scealey of this city and was a member of the Christian church and the Woodman Circle, members of both organizations being at the depot Friday when the body arrived from Walthill and from there they sorrowfully bore the remains to Blair’s city of the dead where it now rests beside those of the husband.

Among those present at the short services at the grave was Kenneth, the sixteen year old son of the departed, and soon after returning from the cemetery he was taken ill, and after consulting a physician who pronounced his case typhoid, was taken to the hospital where he now lies.

This unfortunate family has the sympathy of all in their seemingly endless sorrow and while the ways of the Heavenly Father at times seem hard to bear yet there is the shining passages of the Good Book which teach us that earth is but a stopping place, and when our work here is done we pass into a world where sorrow and sickness is unknown, and His words are wonderful words of consolation.

To the members of the Woodman Circle and other friends who so kindly aided us at the time of the death of our beloved Ida, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks. The Family

Piper, Mrs. Adam

After an illness of about a month with typhoid fever, Mrs. Adam Piper died at her home on a farm near Walthill, Neb., at 6 o’clock last Thursday morning.

The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church Friday and the body brought here Friday afternoon, accompanied by three sons, her mother, Mrs. Mary Scealey, her brother-in-law, N. M. Chapin, and uncle, Jim Wilds. The funeral party was met at the depot by a delegation from the Woodman Circle, of which order the deceased was a member in Walthill, and a large number of relatives and friends and taken direct to the cemetery and laid to rest by the side of her husband, who death occurred only about five weeks ago.

Ida M. Stevens was born in this city Dec. 25, 1871, and was raised and educated here. She was married to Adam Piper Aug. 4, 1887 and lived on a farm north of town up to two years ago, when the family moved onto a farm near Walthill. She was a member of the Christian church at this place. She was the mother of eleven children, eight of whom survive her. Two of the children are very sick with typhoid fever at the family home, and Kenneth, who came down with the body of his mother Friday, was taken down with typhoid fever Saturday and was placed in the Blair hospital at once. She leaves also her mother, Mrs. Mary Scealey, and an only surviving sister, Mrs. N. M. Chapin, of this city. Mrs. Piper carried a policy of $500 in the Woodman Circle, but hadn’t been in long enough to draw the full amount, we understand.
