Mrs. Goldie Piper is Dead

Widow of Fort Calhoun Mayor Dies At 49 After Lingering Illness

Mrs. Goldie Smith Piper, 49, of Fort Calhoun, widow of Mayor Ira A. Piper of that community, died in an Omaha hospital Monday evening after an illness of more than half a year. Her husband died suddenly Dec. 19, 1946.

Services are being held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church, the Sievers Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Piper’s first husband was Clayton Smith, founder of the Calhoun Oil Co. After his death she married Mr. Piper.

Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Smith of Fort Calhoun, two daughters, Mrs. Harold Swanson (Lillian) of Omaha and Carol at home and a brother, Lester V. Smith of Fort Calhoun.

Mrs. Goldie Piper of Calhoun died in the Clarkson hospital last Monday evening. She had been ill since the death of her husband in December, 1947. She was born in Illinois, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Smith. The family moved to Calhoun when she was but a child, and she grew to womanhood there.

Two children, Mrs. Har. Swanson of Omaha and Carol at home are left to mourn her passing. These with her parents and a brother, L. V. Smith of Calhoun, mourn deeply their loss.

She was an active member of the Calhoun Presbyterian church and of Eastern Star lodge and she will be greatly missed.

Funeral services are being held today, Thursday, at 2 p.m. from the Calhoun Presbyterian church under the supervision of Sievers Mortuary, and interment will be made in the Calhoun cemetery.
