Sheffield, Baker “Bate “ 2/27/1912

B. Sheffield Dies. (from the Feb. 28, 1912 Tribune, Blair, Nebraska)

At the home of S.E. Evans in Blair, where he has lain ill for the past three weeks of heart trouble, Baker Sheffield passed this life at 11 o’clock last night. At his bedside an only relative, his sister, Mrs. Hattie Foster of Abingdon, Va., watched the sick man breathe his last, she having arrived from her distant home that morning at 8 o’clock and her coming made the last few hours of her brother’s life much more cheerful, he being conscious until the last moment. Mr. Sheffield came to Blair many years ago from his home in Virginia and has resided here since, his last employment being at the Harrison barn, where he worked up until five weeks ago, when he was first taken ill. Space will not permit the further obituary notice that we should like to give and can only say that he will be missed by a large circle of friends.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon from the home of S.E.Evans, conducted by Rev. McClure, and the body will be buried in Blair cemetery.

Obituary printed in the Feb. 28, 1912 Pilot, Blair, Nebraska

Baker (Bate) Sheffield died at 11 o’clock last night at the J.M. Evans home, of valvular heart trouble. He had been unable to lie down at night even, for about two years, but he worked at the Harrison livery barn up to five weeks ago, when he got so bad he had to quit work. Three weeks ago he went to the Evans home and Mrs. Evans took care of him until the end came. His sister, Mrs. Hattie Foster, of Abingdon, Va., arrived yesterday morning in time to see him before death came. He was conscious to the very last and told Mrs. Evans in the morning he guessed he wouldn’t trouble her much longer. The funeral will be held at the Free Methodist church at 2 o’clock tomorrow, D.T. McClure officiating. He was born in Virginia on Washington’s birthday, February 22nd, 1860, and was therefore just past 52 years of age. He was never married. Besides his sister who came from Virginia yesterday he leaves three sisters. He was a brother to Ben Sheffield, whose sudden death from appendicitis occurred here a few years ago.
