Sheldon, Oliver Houghton (Grandpa) 2/1903

Note: The obituaries say he was buried in New England cemetery; many graves in New England were re-interred in Blair, Nebraska. There is a tombstone in the Blair Cemetery for O.H. Houghton, but there are some discrepancies (1906 instead of 1903, died Feb. 12—these obituaries were Feb. 26 and referred to “yesterday” and so forth) and the US Census says he was born in New York and one of these obituaries says born in Vermont.

The funeral of Grandpa Sheldon took place at the residence on South Street Wednesday forenoon, after which the remains were taken to the New England cemetery where interment was made. Mr. Sheldon, who was in his 72nd year had been enjoying his usual health, and his wide circle of friends were much surprised and shocked on learning that he had died about one o’clock Monday morning from a heart failure. The family have lived a good many years in the county coming from the New England district to Blair several years ago and has many friends in the county whose sympathies are extended to the bereaved family. Mr. Sheldon lived a consistent Christian life full of good works and his jovial good natured greetings will be much missed by his close friends.

#3-Obituary printed in Feb. 26, 1903 Blair Courier, Blair, Nebraska

O.H. Sheldon died at 2 o’clock Tuesday morning of heart failure, and Rev. J.L. Vallow conducted the funeral service at the home at 9 o’clock yesterday morning. The body was then taken to the New England cemetery for interment. Mr. Sheldon attended services last Saturday morning, being an Adventist, and was taken sick in the afternoon. The action of the heart became gradually weaker, though he was able to be up and about only an hour before death came. He was a native of Vermont and spent the most of his life on a farm up in the New England neighborhood. A few years ago he sold the farm and bought the H.H. Reed residence on South street, where he and his wife have since lived. He leaves an adopted daughter, Mrs. James Van Valin, now widowed, who was present at the funeral, also her son, Floyd, and wife of Herman, and Mrs. John Gossard of Fremont were present. Mr. Sheldon would have been 72 years of age had he lived until the 6th of next May. He was a good and kindly man, an honest and upright citizen and a loyal and intelligent believer in the doctrines of his church.
