Fred J. Ehlers, 94, of O’Neill, formerly of Fort Calhoun, died Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Center in Atkinson.

Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 3, at Faith Community Church in O’Neill. Interment will be in the Chambers Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Chambers American Legion Post 320. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at Biglin’s Mortuary in O’Neill.

Fred J. Ehlers was born July 10, 1919, in Bennington, to John and Pauline (Peters) Ehlers.

He married Sylvia Logemann on Aug. 23, 1944, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn. They were married for 65 years before she passed away on May 9, 2010.

He farmed in the Fort Calhoun area for 50 years, raising cattle, sheep, hogs and chickens. He moved to the Chambers area in 1997 and actively helped on the ranch until 2009. He moved to the Evergreen Assisted Living in November 2011, and the Atkinson Good Samaritan Center in February of 2013.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Ehlers was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church in Fort Calhoun, and later a member of Believer’s Bible Church in Omaha.

He was a square dance caller for several years. He called dances in the Omaha and Iowa areas, and even Kansas City and St. Louis.

He is survived by son Randy Ehlers and wife Kathy of Amelia; daughter Kristi Murphy and husband Dennis of Atkinson; five grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Sylvia; sister Loretta; and brother Leon.
