Richard L. Japp, 81, of Washington, died Friday, May 2, 2014, at The Life Care Center of Elkhorn.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington.Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

Richard L. Japp was born Aug. 28, 1932, in Blair, to Fritz W. and Helen (Schmidt) Japp.

He was raised on the family farm near Kennard and attended and graduated from Kennard High School in 1950.

He was baptized and confirmed at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Kennard. Later, he became a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington.

On Aug. 16, 1953, he married Mayone Russell in Tekamah.

He worked on the family farm with his father until he joined the U.S. Army in 1953. He served his country honorably and was discharged in 1955.

After returning from the military, he worked for a construction company and then in 1960 started Japp Construction. He continued to run the company until 2003 when he retired.

After his retirement he became very active in the Tangier and the Mo-Ri Shriners Clubs. He was annually one of the top salesmen of advertising for the Shrine Circus and Shrine Bowl.

He served as a Washington town board member for 45 years with 11 years served as chairman. He was a member of the Herman Legion and was a Mason and a Shriner.

He enjoyed a variety of activities including attending his grandchildren’s events, fishing, camping, playing cards, dancing and traveling.

He is survived by wife Mayone Japp; children: Pamula Japp of Bennington, Scott Japp of Arlington, Lonny (Cindy) Japp of Bennington, Reid (Vicki) Japp of Bennington and Matthew Japp of Kennard; grandchildren: Payge, Dalton, Samantha, Griffin, Ben and Nicole; sisters Darlene Harper of Kennard and Joann (Jack) Lorenzen of Lincoln; brothers Merle (Debi) Japp of Florida and William (Mari) Japp of Kennard.
