Jana Joan "Jo" Simmons, 81, of Omaha, died Sunday, May 11, 2014.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Dundee Presbyterian Church in Omaha. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the 72nd St. Chapel of John A. Gentleman Mortuaries.

She was born May 17, 1932, in Cozad.

She graduated from Benson High School in Omaha and attended the University of Nebraska Omaha.

She was married to Raymond E. Simmons in 1952.

She was a very active member of the Dundee Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Women’s Association, the Mariners Group and Friendly Folk.

She had a great love of fishing and for Lake of the Woods, Canada, where she spent every summer since her early teenage years. She also loved to fly and was one step short of earning her pilot’s license when she was 15.

She served as co-pilot for many years for her father, Raymond Howerter, and her husband, Ray Simmons.

She spent many happy years hooking rugs with a dear group of friends.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Peggy (Randy) Leigh Hundt of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Sally (Timothy) Grissom of Columbia City, Ind.; grandchildren: William (Rachael) Grissom, Matthew (Lindsey) Grissom, Jessica Grissom and Sarah Grissom; great-grandchildren: Edie and Eli Grissom.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Raymond E. Simmons.
