Chris N. Vinderslev, 86, of Friend, formerly of Herman, died Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Bryan East Medical Center in Lincoln.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at the United Church of Christ in Friend. Interment with military services will be in the Herman Cemetery at 3 p.m. Following the committal service, a gathering will be in Herman. Visitation will be noon to 9 p.m. Friday with the family greeting relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home in Friend.

Chris N. Vinderslevwas born March 1, 1928, in Omaha, to Chris N. and Ida C. (Christensen) Vinderslev, the tenth of 12 children.

He attended Herman Public School, graduating with the Class of 1945.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 2, 1946, during World War II. He served in Japan and was discharged on Oct. 17, 1947.

Returning home, he worked at the Mead Ordinance Plant and farmed with his uncle for a short time.

On Feb. 5, 1950, he married Marian Johnson. To this union, three sons, Ronald, Bradley and Norman, were born.

The couple lived in Herman, Mead and Omaha before moving to Friend in 1988. Mrs. Vinderslev died in 1996.

He was later blessed with a second marriage to Janice Rohrig on Nov. 28, 1998, at the Friend United Methodist Church and two stepsons and two stepdaughters were added to his family.

He was employed for 35 years with Continental Can Company, starting as a fork lift operator and later as the operation scheduler, retiring in 1987.

Mr. Vinderslev was formerly a member of the United Church of Christ in Friend and currently was a member of the Friend United Methodist Church.

He also was a member of the Ford-Banka American Legion Post 183 and VFW 4959 in Crete.

One of the highlights of his life was his hero flight in 2012 with his son, Norman, to Washington, D.C.

In his spare time, he loved to work in his garden, especially growing large quantities of vegetables to share with friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was a very caring person and was concerned about all his family and friends. He enjoyed phone calls regularly with his children and having coffee with his buddies. He had lots of fun playing cards with friends. He enjoyed ballroom dancing.

His family was very important to him and he enjoyed spending time with them.

He and his wife, Jan, had spent the last few years wintering in Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Janice of Friend; sons and daughter-in-law: Norman and Linda Vinderslev of Kearney and Ronald Vinderslev of Omaha; three grandchildren; sister, Darlene Dodge of Iowa; stepchildren and their spouses: Ray and Mindy Rohrig and Gary Rohrig, all of Friend, Brenda and Dr. Tim Lieske of Lincoln and Dianna and Bill Groenke of York; eight stepgrandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marian; son Bradley in 2000; two brothers: Elmer N. and Leonard N.; sisters: Helen I. Totton, Dorothy C. Magill, Clara I. Conaway, Vivian Kraemer, Ione Vinderslev, Lola May Vaugh, Betty Ann Hardin and Lila Jean Pedersen.

Memorials may be directed to the Fire Fund for the United Methodist Church, Friend Volunteer Fire Department and American Legion Post 183.

FUNERAL SERVICE 11am, Saturday, May 24, 2014, United Church of Christ, Friend, Rev. Paixao Baptista. Interment, 3pm, Herman Cemetery, Herman, with military services. Following the committal service, a gathering will be held at the Herman Community Church.

VISITATION Friday, noon - 9pm with family greeting relatives and friends 6-8pm at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend. VISITATION also one hour prior to service at church.
