Lowell Meyer

Lowell G. Meyer, 77, of Fremont died Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, in Fremont Area Medical Center.

Lowell was born March 2, 1932, on a farm near Scribner to Gustof and Eda (Suhr) Meyer. He was baptized in March 1932 in St. John’s Lutheran Church (Scribner, county line) and confirmed in 1945 in St. John’s Lutheran Church of Pender. He attended Scribner School District 36 until the sixth grade, Pender School District 59, to the eighth grade, high school in Wisner, ninth through the 11th grade, and graduated from West Point High School in 1949. Lowell graduated from Midland Lutheran College in 1956, and received his Master’s degree from the University of Colorado National Science Foundation in 1960. He did graduate work at the University of South Dakota, University of Nebraska Omaha, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Creighton University in Omaha.

Lowell served in the United States Army during the years of 1953-55, with duty in Korea. Lowell taught school in Blair, 1955-56; Wahoo, 1956-59; Sioux City, Iowa, 1960-64; and Fremont from 1964 until retiring in 1992, and then he was a substitute teacher. He also taught part time at Metropolitan Community College from 1988-99. And, he was the owner of the L&L Apartments.

Lowell married Lola Faye Jessen on July 19, 1953, in Trinity Lutheran Church, Fremont. After his marriage, they lived in Blair, Wahoo, Boulder in Colorado, Sioux City in Iowa and Fremont. Lowell was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont where he had served as an usher, and on the Board of Elders, the Board of Finance, and the Board of Education.

Survivors include: his wife, Lola; two daughters, Deborah (and husband, Jeff) Jones of Fremont and Connie (and husband, David) Burgers of Bennington; two sons, Dale (and wife, Marilyn) Meyer of Lincoln and Larry (and wife, Trudi) Meyer of Papillion; 13 grandchildren; a brother, Lavern (and wife, Donna) Meyer of Boyden, Iowa; seven sisters-in-law, Mardell (and husband, Fred) Heybrock of Arlington, Delores Voss, Shirley Dwyer, Gloria (and husband, Richard) Andersen, Norma Hagerity and Judy Andersen, all of Fremont and Dana Meyer of West Point; two brothers-in-law, Delbert (and wife, Marilyn) Jessen and Lloyd Jessen, all of Fremont.

He was preceded in death by two brothers Don and Orville, brothers-in-law Elmer Voss, Dan Hagerity, and Lanny Andersen, and sisters-in-law Florene Jessen and Rose Marie Jessen.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Military and Lincoln avenues with the Rev. Timothy Gierke officiating. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery with military honors by the Fremont Honor Guard of the American Legion Post 20 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854. Memorials are suggested Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Community Room Kitchen Fund.
