Howard F. "Dick" Peterson, 87, of rural Herman, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at the Norfolk VA Home in Norfolk.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 30, at Salem Lutheran Church at Fontanelle. Interment will be at Vacoma Cemetery north of Arlington at 1 p.m. with military honors. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

Howard F. "Dick" Peterson was born Nov. 27, 1926, at Herman, to Fred and Pauline (Gosker) Peterson.

He graduated in 1944 from Blair High School.

He worked on the farm prior to entering the U.S. Army. He served in Easy Company 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment Combat Team during the Korean War from Dec. 15, 1950, to Oct. 31, 1953, receiving a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star. He was seriously injured and eventually was discharged from the U.S. Army Hospital at Camp Carson in Colorado.

He returned to the Herman area to farm and raise cattle.

He married Betty Scoville on June 8, 1958, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The couple worked the farm that had been in the family for more than a century and is still today. Mr. Peterson enjoyed raising livestock and was an accomplished cattleman.

He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church at Fontanelle and also was a past elder and Sunday school officer. He was a 25-year 4-H leader and past school board member of District 14 Telbasta, life member of DAV, member of Hooper/Nickerson VFW Post 10535 and American Legion Post 274 of Herman.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Herman; sons: Edward Peterson and wife Lisa of Herman and Timothy Peterson and wife Karleen of Arlington; daughters: Robyn Harms and husband Bernie of Dodge and Ruth Evans and husband Don of Ogallala; sister-in-law Arlene Peterson of Blair; 10 grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: Ervin, Merle, Robert and Duane.

Memorials may be directed to Salem Lutheran Church at Fontanelle.
