OLD SETTLER HERE SINCE 1882 PASSES

JOHN SUTHERLAND PASSED AWAY WEDNESDAY AT NEARLY 91 YEARS

HAD MANY FRIENDS

(picture)

John Sutherland, age 90 years, 5 months and 9 days, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Lamb on Wednesday, May 4.

His place of nativity was Jackson county, Indiana, where he grew into manhood and where on December 12, 1867 he was married to Miss Eliza A. Cordill, and where the six older children were born.

In 1882 the family came to Nebraska and settled on a farm four miles west of Blair. Here three more children were born and here the family was reared and educated. Of the nine children, Wm. H. of San Antonio, Texas, Wesley of Blair, Newton of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Mrs. Charles Lamb of Blair, A. J. and Marion of Blair still survive. The remaining three, Mrs. R. A. Hooks, passed away August 11, 1936; Mead in April 15, 1900; and Howard April 15, 1922; and the wife and mother died February 2, 1918.

Besides the surviving children one brother, Will Sutherland, of Tekamah and a brother in Indiana, thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren survive.

To those who knew the deceased, the memory will be one of the deepest respect. In his farming activities he was a good neighbor, upright in his dealings and charitable in his statements of others, always a gentleman. The little trivial things seemed beneath his standard of living and when he moved to town in 1905 and gave over the active operations of his farm to others, he left a neighborhood where every man was his friend.

After his wife died he remarried and the widow still survives and mourns deeply her loss.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday from the Bendorf Funeral Home with Rev. Hamilton of the Baptist church of which he was a member officiating and interment will be made in the Blair cemetery.
