A Masonic service was held Nov. 18 at the North Bend Chapel. A private interment was held at the Sunset Memorial Park in Coos Bay, Ore.

Joe H. “Junior” Campbell was born Dec. 12, 1919, in Blair to James and Lulu (Hoover) Campbell.

He graduated from Blair High School in 1937. On Jan. 12, 1942, he married Elaine L. Gustin in Blair.

After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1945. In 1946, he apprenticed in the funeral business with his uncle, W.O. Campbell, in Coos Bay. Afterward, he attended the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science and graduated in 1947.

Returning to the Coos Bay area, he first worked for KOOS radio station as a salesman and hosted a popular noon program. In 1950, he was recalled into the Navy during the Korean War; and was discharged in 1952.

Mr. Campbell and Dean Watkins purchased the Grimm Funeral Home in North Bend in 1953, and changed the name to Campbell-Watkins Funeral Home. They built and opened the Coos Bay Chapel of Campbell-Watkins in 1959. Mr. Campbell retired from the funeral business in 1981.

Mr. Campbell served as the Coos County chairman for the American Red Cross; was past president of the Oregon Board of Funeral Directors; was a member of the Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards; and was a longtime member and past president of the North Bend Kiwanis Club, which awarded him a 30-year pin for perfect attendance in 1982. He was also the lieutenant governor of Kiwanis from 1972-1973.

He was also involved with the BPOE No. 1160 Elks; North Bend Masonic Lodge No. 140 A.F. & .M.; 32 Degree Mason Hillah Temple Shrine Club, Oriental Band, Scottish Rite; life member of the VFW and American Legion; president of the North Bend Chamber of Commerce from 1960-62. He also helped start the Coast Savings and Loan.

He was one of 10 people who each put in $10 to start the North Bend Student Loan Fund, where he served as president, secretary and board member for many years. He also served on the North Bend Citizen Advisory Committee. In 1993, he was awarded the North Bend Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award. He enjoyed baking cookies for the coffee group he attended.

For many years, Mr. and Mrs. Campbell wintered at their second home in the Palm Springs, Calif., area. He was a member of the Desert Island Country Club, where he and his wife loved to golf.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine, and son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Karen Campbell, all of North Bend; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, George; and sister, Virginia.
