WALLACE “WALLY” DEERSON, 76

Services for Wallace “Wally” Deerson, 76, were held August 20 at Reichmuth Funeral Home in Elkhorn, Rev. Mark Fry officiating. Deerson died August 18 at Valhaven Nursing Home in Valley after a long bout with cancer. Interment was at Prospect Hill Cemetery at Elkhorn.

Wally Arthur Deerson was born September 16, 1916, near Chambers, to Arthur and Maria Deerson. He was baptized in the Christian faith near Martha. He attended country school near Orchard. He moved to Elkhorn as a boy and was confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn. He graduated from Elkhorn High School in 1935.

He married Ina Mae Rohwer September 18, 1938, at Omaha. The couple moved to Beemer where Wally worked as a barber. They later lived in Waterloo, and he later worked for the Rob-See-Co and Safeway companies in Benson, Fremont, Omaha and Neligh. Deerson served in World War II from 1943 – 45, seeing action in New Guinea and the Phillipines.

After returning home, he worked for Safeway and then opened Deerson Grocery in 1947. In 1950, he established the Deerson Meat Plant, which he owned and operated until 1972.

Deerson was a member of the American Legion; a past leader of the Commercial Club; a Mason, a Shriner; and he served on the Elkhorn School Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Cleo Nelson, and a brother, Dennis Deerson.

He is survived by his wife, Ina Mae, of Arlington; a sister, Thelma Schneider of Elkhorn; a daughter, Myrna Deerson of Arlington; a son, Don Deerson and his wife, Sheryl of Bennington; six grandchildren, Ronna Coolman of Omaha; Ramona Cluff of Elkhorn; Nicole Growcock of Arlington; Clint, and Alicia and Jessica Deerson of Bennington; five great-grandchildren, Allan and Jennifer Coolman of Omaha; and Stephen, Christina and Tyler Cluff of Elkhorn; and many nieces and nephews.
