Roland D. Miller was born May 21, 1927, near Humphrey, Neb., to Herbert A. and Clara (Baumgart) Miller. He graduated from Humphrey High School in 1944, and proudly served in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. After using the G.I. Bill to go to business school in Lincoln, he returned to Omaha and entered an on-the-job training program at National Indemnity Insurance Company (NICO), Omaha, which later became the flagship Berkshire Hathaway Group insurance company holding.

While working and rearing his family in Omaha he completed courses at the University of Omaha (now UNO) to gain insurance expertise. He worked his way up the ranks and served as president of NICO from 1982 to 1989, and then as Vice Chairman of the Board from 1989 to 1992 under Chairman Warren Buffett. He retired from NICO in 1992.

Mr. Miller was a gentleman of high integrity with a strong work ethic that extended beyond the corporate world into every aspect of his life, including family, neighborhood, and community involvement. He enjoyed a challenging golf game, the pleasures of gardening, and the rewards of helping friends and neighbors with any job, big or small.

He is survived by his four children and their spouses, Jeffrey and Diana Miller of Richmond, Texas, Timothy and Paulette Miller of Castle Rock, Colo., Suzanne and Mark Lucas of Buena Vista, Colo., and Elizabeth and Richard Harris of Denver, Colo., four grandchildren, sisters and brothers and their spouses, Verjean and Herman Craighead, Herbert and Terrie Miller, Joan McCorkle, Joyce Mueller, Donald Miller, Duane and Dorothy Miller and his long term fiancée and best friend, Janet Bryars.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of 44 years, Jeanette Kruse Miller, originally of Fort Calhoun.

Memorials are suggested to the donor’s local public television or radio station, the charity of your choice, or to the Miller family.

Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home in Fort Calhoun is in charge of arrangements.
