Walter Miller, 90

Walter Fredrick Miller, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Blair.

Services were Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah. Rev. Peggy Cooper and Rev. Kenneth A. Jensen officiated. Burial was in the Tekamah Cemetery.

Mr. Miller was born July 12, 1907, in rural Herman, the third of eight children born to Peter and Emma (Janssen) Miller. He was baptized and confirmed in the Vacoma German Lutheran Church. He grew up in the rural Hooper and Herman areas and attended Bell Center School and the Herman Public Schools. On Aug. 7, 1935, he married Mary Caroline Newell at Blair. They began farming in the rural Tekamah area in 1935. He had lived at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home for the past 1 ½ years.

He was Nebraska State Corn Picking Champion in 1961, 1962 and 1963 and competed at the national level as a representative of the state of Nebraska and International Harvester. He was a long-time member of the Farm Bureau and the National Farmers’ Organization and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and David Coleman of Escondido, Calif.; two sisters, Viola West of Herman and Maxine Bragg of Council Bluffs, Iowa; several cousins and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Caroline; an infant son, Walter Lee; a daughter, Nancy Kathleen; three sisters, Lucy Sheets, Louella Metzler and Roma Gilliland; and two brothers, Delmar Miller and Lester Miller.

Casket bearers were Larry Jackson, Dennis Connealy, John Eriksen, Jim Jensen, Ken Robertson and Ralph Anderson, Jr.

Honorary casket bearers were Jim West, Leon Bragg, Gordon Cram, Herbert Gamet, Donald McCain and Donald Miller.

Diane Kindler was organist.

Memorials may be given to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Blair or the Burt County Museum in Tekamah.

Hamel-Peck-Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah was in charge of arrangements.
