Valerian M. Moravec, 81

Valerian “Larry” M. Moravec, 81, of Arlington, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, at Arbor Manor in Fremont.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, at the Arlington Community Church. Interment, with military honors provided by members of American Legion Post No. 71 and VFW Post No. 8332 of Arlington, will be at the Arlington Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb., at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the church on Thursday, for one hour prior to services.

Valerian Melvin Moravec was born Nov. 24, 1925, to Frank and Frances (Krenk) Moravec at home in Seward County. He attended school at Bee, then Garland High School, where he graduated as valedictorian of his class.

He farmed with his father at Ithaca until he was inducted into the armed services during the Korean War. He served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952. Upon his return from the war, he married Beverly Bricker on Nov. 30, 1952, at Ashland. In 1954, they moved to a farm at Arlington, where Mr. Moravec lived out his life farming.

He was a member of the Arlington Community Church in Arlington where he served on many committees and was past moderator of the church council. He served on the Nickerson Co-op Board of Directors where he served for 15 years and was their moderator for two years. He was a member of the Rural Nickerson Fire District Board for 21 years, was a lifetime member of the Nickerson VFW and member of Arlington American Legion Post No. 71 for 19 years, the Arlington VFW Post No. 8332, and was a 30-year member of the Fraternal Order of eagles No. 200 of Fremont.

Mr. Moravec also loved to play baseball in his younger years. He played for the Ithaca town team for several years both before and after serving in the military. He also played baseball while attending school in Ira-Jima, Japan, while in the service.

He is survived by his wife, Bev; sons and daughters-in-law Kent and Lisa Moravec of Ithaca; Keith and Susie Moravec of Arlington, Daryl and Kathy Moravec of Howells, Mich.; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Scott Thompson of Blair and Lori Moravec and Jeff Varhol of New York City, N. Y. His family notes he had a great love for his grandchildren that always brought a smile to his face. Eleven grandchildren survive him, as does one great-grandchild; other survivors include his sisters and brothers-in-law, Gladys and Gerald Divis and Wilma Buck of Ashland; Jeri and Curtis Fleming of Morse Bluff, Darlene and Carl Wills of Lincoln, and sister-in-law, Gladys Moravec of Seward; many nephews, nieces and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Edmund Moravec.

Memorials are suggested to the Arlington Community Church and the Arlington Community Fund.
