W.W. McMillan

The grim messenger of death has again entered this community and summoned on the best known and most loved citizens—W.W. McMillan, who passed from among us Monday, Jan. 2. Although Wallie, as he was known to every man, woman, boy and girl in this section, had been in poor health for about a year, he had attended to his duties as manager of the cream station and city clerk until two months ago, when illness forced him to remain at home for several weeks. However, he improved sufficiently that he was able to come down to his place of business daily until only a few days before his death and his unexpected demise is a shock and a personal grief to everyone in Ft. Calhoun and vicinity. He had almost continuously for nearly twenty years held positions of public trust and responsibility in Ft. Calhoun, having served as mayor, councilman, city clerk, city treasurer, postmaster, and member of the school board and city clerk at the time of his death. His popularity is attested to by the fact that he was never defeated for an elective office. He was capable, big-hearted, jovial, the kindest and most indulgent of fathers. His death is particularly sad in that his five children are left motherless and fatherless, the mother passing away five years ago. Since her death the father has devoted himself well and faithfully to the task of keeping together and caring for these children, and all of us who know this splendid family realize how well he has carried on that sacred trust.

Mr. McMillan was born in Blair Feb. 21, 1880 and attended the public schools in that place. In 1904 he was married to Miss Grace Vaughan of Ft. Calhoun, and in 1907 they moved here. Mrs. McMillan died in 1922 , leaving five children, Irene, Neil, Jessie, Dorothy and Janie, who now are called upon to mourn the loss of their father. He is also survived by his brother, Bruce, of Blair and four sisters, Mrs. F. M. Holloway of Omaha, Mrs. Fred Dickmeyer of Kennard, Mrs. C.H. Robertson and Miss Agnes McMillan of Blair.

The funeral service will be held from the residence at 2 o’clock this afternoon and burial will be in the Ft. Calhoun cemetery.
