Marie C. Novak, 85, of Blair, died Friday, July 25, 2014, surrounded by her family at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair.

Funeral services were Monday, July 28, at First Lutheran Church in Blair with interment at the Blair Cemetery immediately following.

On Oct. 13, 1928, Marie C. Hansen was born to Danish parents Axel and Emma Hansen in Orum. She was baptized by Reverend P.J. Reiners on Feb. 23, 1929, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Orum. She was confirmed by the Rev. H.C. Jorgensen on April 2, 1944, at First Lutheran Church in Blair. She attended March School in Blair for 10 years and graduated from Blair High School in 1946. She attended Dana College, where she received a teaching certificate in 1948. She taught for two years at Lincoln School in Blair.

She was united in marriage to Ralph Novak on June 10, 1949, at First Lutheran Church in Blair. They had three children: Ron, Gary and Jolene. She was adored by her six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter. The couple lived on the Novak farm homestead and farmed 220 acres along with raising livestock. Along with being a homemaker, she was active in the community. She was very involved with 4-H, serving as an assistant club leader and was in the Washington County Extension Club for more than 60 years. She served as a volunteer for the Memorial Community Hospital Annual Auxiliary Sale; American Red Cross blood drives; Election Committee; and was a member of the Red Hat Society and First Lutheran Church. She loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed baking, sewing, crocheting, babysitting and attending family events. She enjoyed collecting Danish plates, souvenir spoons and bells.

She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph, of 65 years; sons, Ron (Vicki) Novak of Blair and Gary Novak (Laurie Hayes) of Verdigre; daughter Jolene (Marty) Hug of Hastings; granddaughter Crystal (Brian) Brislen of Omaha, granddaughter, Susanne (J.P.) Haas of Omaha; granddaughters, Colleen Novak of Blair, Shawna Novak (Jeff Nilges) of Blair and Kiley Hug of Hastings; grandson Brad Hug of Hastings, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, sister, Lila (Bernard) Gosker, sister, Lorraine Mencke; and brother-in-law, Ben Fischer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Axel and Emma Hansen, and sister, Esther Fischer.
