HEART ATTACK WHILE FISHING FATAL TO FORMER BLAIRITE

Ivan Leon Terrell, 57 years of age, Oakland, Calif., died Wednesday, Aug. 10, of a heart attack while fishing for salmon. Funeral services and burial were held in Oakland.

Mr. Terrell was born Oct. 29, 1902 in Blair. He attended the Blair Public School, and for a number of years lived with his parents on Colfax Street. He has made his home in Oakland for the past 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Manila; his mother, Mrs. Maude Terrell, Laytonville, Calif.; brothers, Edwin of San Jose, Calif.; Paul of Evanston, Ill.; George of Sacramento, Calif.; Marshall of Oakland, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Nettie Munson of Oakland, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Terrell was a mechanic and retired this year. He liked nothing better than fishing for salmon outside the Golden Gate. Terrell had a heart condition and was advised by his doctor to give up fishing.

A California newspaper reported:

“Terrell ignored the warning yesterday.

“Shortly after dawn he left his home at 8903 Dowling St., and boarded the party fishing boat, Efie K., with a group of other fisherman at the Berkeley Yacht Harbor.

“About eight miles northwest of the Golden Gate Bridge, Terrell dropped his line and waited.

“Moments later he had a strike. It was a big one - -35 pounds of fighting salmon. Terrell’s line sang as he played the fish.

“The battle lasted perhaps 15 minutes.

“Terrell’s heart was pounding with excitement as he reeled in the big one and flopped it over the side of the boat.

“The other fishermen crowded around and cheered.

“Then Terrell’s heart quit and he collapsed and died.”
