Nis A. Mommsen, 69

Nis “Pete” Mommsen, 69, of Blair, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair following a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, at First Lutheran Church in Blair. Interment will be in the Blair Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Nis “Pete” A. Mommsen was born May 7, 1936, in Niebull, Germany, to Bahne and Meta (Jacobsen) Mommsen. He grew up in Germany and at the age of 14, went into apprenticeship for four years in Denmark. In 1958, at the age of 22, he came to the United States, where he moved to Fort Calhoun and lived with his uncle, Andrew Mommsen. He was drafted into the Army in 1960 and served two years active duty and two years reserve.

On Aug. 12, 1963, he married Eloise “Ellie” F. Wenger at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Baltimore, Md. The couple made their home in Blair, where Mr. Mommsen began working for Runyon-Long Construction in 1959. In the late 1970s, he began his own tile business. Throughout his life, he worked as a Mason and Tile Layer. He was a member of the American Legion and the Masons. He retired in 2001 and was still in demand by many. He was well-known and liked by all. He was always willing to help others as needed. He loved socializing with others and had many friends. He loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Ellie; children and spouses, Lester Bahne and Teresa Mommsen of Marysville, Wash.; Christopher Allen and Amy Mommsen of Blair; brothers and sister-in-law, Hans and Wiebke (Buker) Mommsen and Walter Mommsen; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie and Werner Thiedemann, Christine Vollert, Elke Jorgensen, and Hanna and Wolfgang Meier-Ebert, all of Germany; four grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins in Germany and cousins and in Nebraska; Evelyn and Phillip Lang, Crystal Chapman, Edward Mommsen, Eleanor Mommsen, and Irene Mommsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Arthur Mommsen; brothers-in-law, John Vollert, Walter Jorgensen; uncle, Andrew Mommsen; cousins, Gerhardt Mommsen, Hans Mommsen, Kenneth Chapman, and Shirley Mommsen.

Memorials are suggested to the first Lutheran Church of Blair, American Cancer Society, or Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.
