Duane Lavere Bauers, 82, of Craig, formerly of Blair, died Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at his home in Craig.

A memorial service was Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at Pelan Funeral Services in Oakland with Rusty Lane officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery with military honors by Ryan VFW Post 5543 and American Legion Post 46.

Duane was born May 12, 1932, at Crab Orchard to Fred E. and Nora W. (Wilken) Bauers. Duane spent much of his childhood living in Falls City.

On Dec. 1, 1950, at the age of 18, Duane joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in October 1954. He then resided in Los Angeles, Calif., for about 30 years.

Duane married Jacqueline Rankin in 1955. They had two children, Michael and Kathleen. Jackie preceded him in death.

Duane was employed as a semi-truck driver by United Parcel Service for 25 years, retiring in 1985. He returned to Nebraska in 2002, living in Craig since 2004.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Burdette, Alger, Lyle and Darl Bauers; sisters: Natalie and Donnabell; wife Jackie.

He is survived by wife, Paula; brother L. L. Bauers of Washington; son Michael (Jackie) Bauers of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; daughter Kathi (Jack) Burgoyne of Irvine, Calif.; four grandchildren: Sean Bauers, Sarah Faucher, Brent Burgoyne and Blaine Burgoyne; and six great-grandchildren: Carson, Caitlyn, Landon, Gavin, Brycen and Clayton.

Duane was a grateful friend of Bill W. for over 53 years. He was gracious and devoted to his family, friends and fellows. His life’s work was to help those in need and to mentor fellow AA and NA members.
