Louise Thompson, 104, of Arlington, died Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Center in Scribner. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the Arlington Community Church. Interment will be in the Arlington Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb 16, at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington. Visitation will also be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Louise Van Valkenburgh was born Feb. 18, 1905, in Melvin, Ill., to the Rev. Hugh and Mary Jane (Smith) Van Valkenburgh. The family moved to Nebraska when she was a child. She graduated from Havelock High School in Lincoln in 1924. She then attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for her teaching certificate.

She taught for a number of years in Wyoming and Nebraska, including five years at Arlington.

She moved to the Arlington area in 1931. On June 12, 1938, she married Leonard G. Thompson at Arlington. Her father performed the marriage.

Mr. and Mrs. Thompson farmed north of Arlington. After her husband’s death in 1981, she moved into Arlington in 1983.

She was a member of the Arlington Community Church for more than 50 years, where she served as a deaconess. She also served in the Sunday School program and the church women’s groups. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson were named the “Church Family of the Year” by Pastor Merle Adams in the 1940s. Mrs. Thompson was also active in the Arlington Senior Center.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the Arlington Community Church or the Arlington Senior Center.
