AUTOPSY CONTINUING ON MAN FOUND IN MISSOURI RIVER

The Douglas County Coroner’s Office is continuing to perform an autopsy on the body of a Blair man found in the Missouri River last weekend.

The body of Robert “Robbie” Thompson, 41, of Blair, was found by fishermen at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, December 5, approximately 1/8 mile south of the Missouri River bridge near Blair. Thompson was pronounced dead on arrival at the Missouri Valley, Iowa, hospital after he was retrieved from the river by members of the Missouri Valley rescue squad.

Harrison County Sheriff Terry Baxter said the main reason why the autopsy was continuing was that he had requested a toxicology report from the Douglas County coroner to determine if drugs or alcohol may have contributed to Thompson’s death. Even though the autopsy and the investigation is continuing, Baxter said there has thus far been no reason to suspect that Thompson’s death was a homicide.

“The autopsy has so far not given us an issue outside of what we are leaning toward in our investigation,” Baxter said. “The investigation is not leaning to foul play and, in the autopsy, there is nothing to indicate foul play.”

Baxter also noted Thompson’s vehicle was found near the bridge and was searched thoroughly by investigators. While Baxter said nothing was found in the vehicle, items were found in Thompson’s Blair residence that helped investigators although Baxter would not comment on what those items were.
