Dorothy Irene Haight, 89, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2014, in Missouri Valley, Iowa.

Services were Aug. 16 at Hennessey Funeral Home in Missouri Valley. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Missouri Valley.

Dorothy Irene Christo was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Minden, Iowa to Cassius Clay and Lorena May Clark Christo.

She attended country school at Hardscatch and Harris Grove through 8th grade. She earned her GED in 1976.

Dorothy married Donald Haight on March 31, 1947, in Glenwood, Iowa. They were blessed with four children; Wayne, Rita, Lorna and Wanda.

Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to anyone she met. They lived in Blair for a couple of years after their marriage and then moved to the family farm in Old Town south of Missouri Valley. They moved the family to Missouri Valley in 1965.

She worked helping Donald on the farm for many years. Dorothy worked at Tip Top Manufacturing in Omaha and was a cook at Sunnyside Cafe for several years.

Dorothy loved to spend time with her family and especially her grandchildren whom it seems she could never say no to. She loved to read, sew and go fishing. If one of the grandkids wasn’t around to go, she would pick up a friend to take along for the afternoon of fishing.

Dorothy loved to work in the garden raising her tomato plants and flowers, especially gladiolas, roses and lilies. She also loved African violets and would start new plants from hers to give to friends and family. She enjoyed taking her gladiolas and violets to the county fair.

Dorothy was always on the go. She loved giving people rides to the store, doctor or sometimes to the casinos. She made many very good and long-lasting friendships through her good deeds. She would always leave Donald a note on the kitchen table to say where she was off to each time.

Survivors include son Wayne Haight and wife Laurie of Bellflower, Calif.; daughters: Lorna Banka and fiancé Dave Stuckey of Omaha and Wanda Gibson and husband Roger of Blair; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brother Leonard Christo and wife Mary of Pleasantville, N.Y.; sisters-in-law Janice Coberly Christo of Mesa, Ariz., and Dorothy Haight Loken of Eugene, Ore.; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald; daughter Rita; five brothers, two sisters and brother-in-law Newt Loken.
