Lawrence Russell “Mac” Makinen, 79, of Blair, formerly of Woodbine, Iowa, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine, Iowa with Pastor Marti Puls of the Woodbine First United Methodist Church officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Weiss American Legion Post 143 in Woodbine with interment in the Woodbine Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine, 501 Normal St.

Mac was born April 25, 1935, in Eveleth, Minn. to Sakri and Hilda (Moilanen) Makinen. He was raised in Sparta Location in Minnesota and graduated from Gilbert High School in 1953.

Mac proudly served his country in the U. S. Army and Air Force.

Mac married Judy Ann Daugherty on Feb. 19, 1963, at the United Methodist Church in Woodbine.

The couple lived in Woodbine and then moved to Blair in 1975. Mac worked at Kelly Ryan, Coastal Yachts and CON-E-CO, all in Blair. He retired from CON-E-CO and then worked for the Ace Hardware also in Blair.

Mac was a member of the Blair American Legion. He enjoyed reading, watching Nascar and “The Price is Right.” He also enjoyed traveling and going to the casino.

He is survived by his three children: Todd and his wife Carla Makinen of Orr, Minn., Troy Makinen of Mountain Iron, Minn., and Staci Makinen of Blair; two grandchildren: Randi Makinen of Omaha and Trisha Makinen of Orr; great-granddaughter Gethsemane Cordes; brother-in-law Bill Hutcheson and wife Diana of Woodbine; four nieces: Karen Soyring of Virginia, Minn., Becky and husband Ed Moeglein of Wolf Creek, Mont., Donna Draze of Mountain Iron, Minn., Lori and husband Kevin Gochenour of Logan, Iowa; nephew Steve Hutcheson and wife Mary of Kansas City, Mo.; and many other relatives and friends.

Mac was preceded in death by his parents; wife Judy on July 3, 2009; sister Laila Korpi; and sister-in-law Phyllis Hutcheson.
