KATE SASS TIEDJE

Funeral services were held November 20 at the Hadan Golden Mortuary in Bennington for Kate Sass Tiedje. Dr. Norman Schroeder officiated.

Joyce Johnson sang, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art.” Verna Kniep was organist.

Casket bearers were Walt, Robert, Kenny and Marvin Sass, Duane Braesch and David Tiedje.

Interment was in Flower Hill Cemetery with the Hadan Golden Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

Kate Sass Tiedje was born October 22, 1901, in Douglas County, Benson area, to Claus and Bertha Sass. She passed away at Valhaven Colonial Manor in Valley, November 17, at the age of 84 years and 26 days.

Kate attended grade school in District 27, known as Sunny Side School. After she graduated from the eighth grade, she lived at the sewing school in the home of Mrs. Cook in Blair for several winters.

She was married to C. H. Tiedje February 20, 1926. In 1976 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Four children were born to this union.

Until her illness she lived on the farm place in the rural Bennington area. She loved the outdoors and her flowers. During the winter she did a lot of crocheting and when the weather was nice she would take walks on her farm.

Because of her illness Kate moved to Valhaven Colonial Manor nursing home in Valley August 1, 1983. She resided there until her death Sunday morning, November 17, exactly nine years to the day on which her husband, C. H. Tiedje, was buried.

Also preceding her in death were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claus Sass, brothers Henry Sass and William Sass, sister Tracy Sass and son-in-law John Novotny.

She is survived by two sons, Leroy Tiedje and wife Jean of Bennington, and Melvin Tiedje and wife Mary Ann of Omaha; two daughters, Lois and husband Orville Petersen of Bennington, and Evelyn (Mrs. John) Novotny of Valley; two brothers, John Sass and Milton Sass, both of Bennington; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
