Martha E. C. Nelson, 86

Former Herman resident Martha E.C. Nelson, 86, of Wahoo, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, in Yankton, S.D.

Funeral services were Thursday, Aug. 27 at Pohocco Lutheran Church in Fremont. Interment was at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Elkhorn.

Martha Ebba Cecelia Swanson was born May 22, 1923, at Oakland, to Nils and Edith (Jonson) Swanson. She grew up in that area and graduated from Oakland High School.

On July 6, 1941, she married Arthur L. Nelson in the flower garden of her parents’ home on a farm near Oakland. The couple lived in Oakland until 1951 when they moved to a farm near Herman.

Mrs. Nelson was a 50-year member of the Herman Chapter #216, Order of the Eastern Star. She was involved in many church and community activities and civic organizations.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Bob Medeck of Yankton, S.D., Cheryl and Glenn O’Neill of Omaha, Connie and Dan Watts of North Bend, Janet and Jerry Wolf of Lincoln; son and daughter-in-law, John and Ila Nelson of Wahoo; brothers and sisters-in-law, Weldon Swanson of Leavenworth, Kan., Tom and Carrol Swanson of Great Falls, Mont,, Dwain Swanson of Valier, Mont., and Gordon and Linda Swanson of Hooper; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Lillian; and brothers, Rudolph, Larry, and Marvin.

Memorials are suggested to Pohocco Lutheran Church, American Cancer Society or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Pruss-Nabity Funeral Home of Wahoo was in charge of arrangements.

FUNERAL Thursday 11 am, Pohocco Lutheran Church, Fremont. VISITATION Wednesday, 1-8 pm with family 5-8 pm and Prayer Service and Eastern Star Service 7 pm all at funeral home. Interment Prospect Hill, Elkhorn. Memorials to the church, American Cancer Society, or National MS Society.
