L. A. Farnberg Served as City Councilman for Many Years

Funeral Services To Be Held Friday

L. A. “Louie” Farnberg, 88, retired hardware man who had lived in Blair most of his life, died in his sleep early yesterday at the family home, 302 E. South St. where he had resided more than half a century.

Mr. Farnberg had been bedfast for a week, and the entire family had been at his bedside.

Funeral services, it was announced this morning, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Campbell Mortuary. Interment will follow in Blair Cemetery.

Native of Drammen, Norway, Lauritz Andrew Farnberg was born Dec. 25, 1858, and came to Omaha at the age of 21, alter coming to Blair. He and Karen Johnson of the Herman vicinity were married 63 years ago. Mr. Farnberg worked for the old Teaberry Hardware here for a time; and later went into partnership with the late H. N. Thone in operating the Thone & Farnberg Hardware. The store was destroyed by fire in the late 20’s and later was rebuilt, Mr. Thone having meanwhile retired from business. Mr. Farnberg himself retired in 1937, turning the business over to his son, William, who has since moved it to its present location at Eighth and South Sts.

Mr. Farnberg served for many years as a city councilman. He also served as head of the local M.W.A. Camp for many years.

Surviving Mr. Farnberg are his wife, Karen, 84; four sons, John of Chicago, Carl of Redwood Falls, Minn., County Clerk Louis C. Farnberg and William Farnberg, both of Blair; a daughter, Miss Clara Farnberg, at home; and six grandchildren. Another daughter, Mrs. Robert Redfield (Lillian) died in 1936.

Prominent In Early Business Circles Here. Was A Councilman

Lauritz A. Farnberg passed away at his home on South Street on Wednesday morning at the ripe old age of 88 years.

Deceased was born in Norway on December 25, 1858. Had he lived until next Christmas he would have been 89 years. He came to this country when twenty one years of age, coming directly to Blair where he has since resided.

For over forty years he was actively engaged in business, most of which time he was in the hardware business. He was also active in civic affairs and served several years on the city council.

He was married in 1884 to Miss Karen Johnson who, with five children, survive him. The children are John of Chicago; Carl of Redwood Falls, Minnesota; Clara at home; Louie C. and Wm. of Blair.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Campbell Mortuary, and interment will be made in the Blair cemetery.

Thus passes one of Blair’s oldest settlers, having settled here in 1870 making him a resident for 68 years. In all these years he lived a life that was beyond reproach. His word was never doubted and his friends were legion His passing brings to a close a life of usefulness and square dealing with his fellowmen.
