HANS DIEDLEF TIETGEN

Never before has so many people attended a funeral in Ft. Calhoun as came to that of our dear friend and neighbor, Hans Tietgen, August 11, 1912.

Hans was born in Waukendorf, Holstein, Germany October 20, 1841, came to American in 1871 and was married here in Ft. Calhoun, Neb., in 1872 to Miss Dora T. Wohr and moved to a rented farm, that he afterwards purchased, about six miles southwest of town, where by faithful, hard labor he was enabled to retire in favor of one of his sons in 1907, when he built the handsome cottage he occupied at the time of his death, which occurred after an operation in an Omaha hospital.

This writer has known him personally for over forty years and has been his near neighbor the last five and no one who has known him for any length of time could fail to respect him. He was baptized in childhood in the Lutheran church in the home land, so the sermon and music were in the mother tongue. Rev. Grahn of the Ponca Creek Lutheran church presided. Mrs. Charles Rathjen, Mrs. Edward Brenner and Miss Edith Neale sang the anthems, with Mrs. W. McMillan at the organ.

He leaves besides his widow, seven sons and daughters - - Mrs. John Kruse, Ft. Calhoun; Mrs. Henry Lage, Carroll; Henry Tietgen, Carroll; Wm. Tietgen, Ft. Calhoun; Emil Tietgen, Sholes; Hans Tietgen, Sholes, and Walter Tietgen, Carroll.

The active pallbearers were six members of his own family. The honorary pallbearers were Tim Ohrt, Hans Schwager, Peter Schmidt, John Hindrichsen, Nicholas Resen and Charles Rathjen

. Among others present were Mrs. Grahn, Paul Stoltenburg and wife, Fritz Koepke and wife, Thos. Ritchie and others from Douglas county.

To the many friends who sent flowers and gave their love, sympathy and labor during this sorrowful period, Mrs. Tietgen and her entire family wish to express their deepest thanks. W.H. WOODS

(typed as printed in the newspaper. Mrs. Tietgen’s maiden name was “Mohr,” as can be found in the obituary record of Dora (Mohr) Tiegen.)
