Charles H. Martin, 83

Charles H. Martin, 83, of Arlington, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at the A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

Services were Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the First United Methodist Church in Fremont. Interment with military honors was at the Hooper Cemetery.

Charles H. Martin was born March 1, 1927, in Fitchburg, Mass., to George Everett and Violet (Walck) Martin. He grew up in Fitchburg and attended Fitchburg High School.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and served aboard the USS Randolph. He was discharged April 5, 1946, and returned to Fitchburg.

He worked at Dillon Steam Boilers until 1949, and then was employed by NL Industries (later known as Magnus/Farley Metals). In 1961, he was transferred to Fremont, where he managed Magnus/Farley Metals until retiring in 1985.

On July 2, 1963, he married Bonnie Wolcott at the First United Methodist Church in Fremont. The couple moved to Arlington in 1967.

Mr. Martin was a member of the Fremont Antique Car Club, Pathfinders Reenactors, and the Elkhorn Valley Gun Club. He was an honorary member of the Fitchburg, Mass., Rotary Club, and was a longtime member of the YMCA.

He made a replica of John C. Fremont's mountain Howitzer cannon, and later donated it to the City of Fremont.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed life and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; son, Todd Alan Martin of Virginia Beach, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Tina M. and Anthony Knight of Huntsville, Ala.; five grandchildren, Trenton and Jessica Winter, and Ariana, Kayla and Kassidy Knight; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Louise Martin of Dayton, Ohio, and Chester and Doris Martin of Townsend, Mass.; sister, Charlotte Mosher of Fitchburg.
