Lewis E. “Bill” Smith, 80

Lewis E. “Bill” Smith, 80, of Omaha, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002 in Omaha.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Omaha. Interment will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Blair Cemetery. Visitation will begin Tuesday at the West Center Chapel, 7805 West Center Road, in Omaha, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Lewis E. “Bill” Smith was born April 4, 1921, in Woodfield, Ohio, to Alfred E. and Ethel Marie (Pennington) Smith. He graduated from Woodfield High School in 1939.

In 1942, he joined the Army, serving at Fort Benning, Ga., Hawaii, New Orleans, La., Richmond, Va., Korea, Japan, and Fort Carson, Colo. He retired from the service in 1962, having obtained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He married Madge C. Petersen on April 28, 1946, in Canton, Ohio.

After his retirement from the Army, the couple moved to Omaha, where Mr. Smith sold insurance for the Prudential Life Insurance Company for 16 years.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Ron Grasmick of Omaha, Nicki and Craig Tiedtke of Wayne, five grandchildren, and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Madge, one brother, and two sisters.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul United Methodist Church in Omaha.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
