Madge C. Smith, 78

Madge C. Smith, 78, of Omaha, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at her home in Omaha.

Services were Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Omaha. Burial was in the Blair Cemetery.

Madge C. Smith was born Oct. 31, 1921, to Walter W. and Golda Gay (Smith) Petersen in Omaha.

She graduated from Blair High School in 1939. She took nurses training at Clarkson School of Nursing from 1939 to 1942. She spent two years in the Army Nursing Corp during WWII.

On April 28, 1946, she married Lewis E. “Bill” Smith in Canton, Ohio, whom she met while in the service.

Her husband continued his career in the military, resulting in their living in several locations. After her husband’s retirement from the Army in 1962, they moved to Omaha, where they have resided since that time.

She and her husband joined the St. Paul United Methodist Church in 1962, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women.

She worked for a short time at the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute and as a volunteer at Methodist Hospital. She enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to several bridge clubs.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nicki and Craig Tiedtke of Wayne and Cindy and Ron Grasmick of Omaha; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jody and Augie Stricker of Fergus Falls, Minn., and Gay and Dale Crandell of Grand Island; five grandchildren, Amy Jackson, Dan Tiedtke, and Darcie, Hayley and Kara Grasmick; and one great-grandson, Zane Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul United Methodist Church in Omaha.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
