Mrs. Nellie H. Smith Dies Late Tuesday/Funeral Service to be Held This Afternoon

Mrs. Nellie H. Smith, a resident of Washington county for over sixty-three years passed away at her home on west Grant street Tuesday afternoon following a lingering illness. She had not been in the best of health but had been able to be about until a short time before her death.

Mrs. Smith was born in Guelf, Canada, April 5, 1863, and came to Washington county with her parents in 1868, the father, Peter Stewart, taking a homestead a mile north of Orum. Mrs. Smith was graduated from the Blair high school in 1880 and the following year she was married to James R. Smith in Blair. Mr. and Mrs. Smith celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on the 2nd of July, this year. Mrs. Smith held a very wide acquaintance in Washington county and was highly thought of for her fairness and integrity. She had extensive property holdings, among them a number of business properties in Blair.

Surviving her are the bereaved husband, two children, Florence at home and Grover of Detroit, Michigan. Funeral services will be conducted from the family home this afternoon at 2:00 o’clock.

PIONEER RESIDENT OF BLAIR PASSES

Mrs. James R. Smith of west Grant street passed away on last Tuesday, December 8, at her home following a long and lingering illness.

Nellie H. Stewart was born in Guelph, Ontario, Canada April 5, 1863, of Scotch parentage. She came to Blair with her parents at the age of five years and has resided here continuously.

She was married July 2, 1881 to James R. Smith who survives her. She is also survived by a daughter, Florence at home and a son, Grover of Detroit, Mich.

Her father, Peter Stewart, long since deceased, homesteaded one mile north of Blair.

Mrs. Smith has long been identified with the business interests of the city. She had an exceptional keen business foresight which she used advantageously.

She was a member of the local Eastern Star in which she has been very active during her earlier years. Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon, Dec. 10, at the Smith home at two o’clock with Rev. George of the Crowell Home in charge.

Interment was made in the local cemetery.
