Calvin O. Jorgensen, 84, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair.

Memorial services were Monday, Jan. 26, at First Lutheran Church in Blair.

Calvin Ole Jorgensen was born Feb. 4, 1924, in Williston, N.D., to Ole and Dora (Andersen) Jorgensen. He was baptized into the Christian faith and received his early elementary education in Williston.

In 1934, the family moved to a farm just outside of Poy Sippi, Wis., where he was confirmed at First English Lutheran Church. He graduated from Poy Sippi State Graded School, and then enrolled as a student at Berlin High School. He was a star baseball player at Berlin High and, for a time, even considered a professional baseball career. He was drafted into military service at the end of his senior year.

Upon returning from the military, he enrolled at Dana College in Blair, and graduated four years later with a bachelor of arts degree in biology. Following graduation in 1951, he accepted a teaching position at Schuyler High School.

In 1959, he returned to his alma mater as director of admissions. During the next 15 years, he expanded the Admissions Office, resulting in increased enrollment. He also traveled extensively, representing Dana throughout the Midwest.

It was on one of his college recruiting trips to Denver, Colo., that he met Alice Eriksen. The couple married one year later, on June 26, 1960.

The newlyweds made their home in Blair, where Mr. Jorgensen continued his duties directing the admissions program at Dana. They were active at First Lutheran Church, where Mr. Jorgensen taught Sunday School and served on the Church Council. In 1975, he accepted a position with Principal Financial Group, from which he retired in 1989.

He will perhaps best be remembered for his genial attitude and jovial presence. But beneath that carefree exterior was a man of deep spiritual convictions rooted in the faith of his fathers.

He is survived by Alice, his wife of 48 years; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jodi and Tom Roekle, Jill and Doug Russell, and Juli Jorgensen; grandchildren, Jade, Quinn, Omar, Khalil, Connor, Ethan, and Anna; a sister, Iva Minner of Wisconsin; two nieces, Linda Schroeder of Blair and Bonnie Glass of Wisconsin; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
