HAD A LIFELONG LOVE OF TEACHING

Alice L. Meyer, 92, of Missouri Valley, Iowa, died Aug. 29, 2010.

Funeral services were Sept. 4 at the Christian Church in Missouri Valley. Interment was in the Rose Hill Memorial Garden.

Alice Lucile Wallis was born Sept. 27, 1917, on Round Lake Island, near Mondamin, Iowa, to Walter K. and Francis E. (Gee) Wallis. She was baptized at the Mondamin Church of Christ in 1928.

She attended school in the Mondamin area, participating in music, declamatory, basketball and 4-H. She graduated as Salutatorian of the Class of 1934 and went on to Normal Training and summer school at the Colorado Teachers College in Greeley.

She taught country school at Herring School (near River Sioux) and in the Mondamin public schools. In 1943, she moved to California where she worked in the offices of Lockheed Aircraft during World War II.

On June 6, 1946, she married Bryan J. Meyer of Missouri Valley. They lived west of Missouri Valley and farmed in the California Junction area for the next 40 years.

Mrs. Meyer was a devoted daughter, wife and mother. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and actively participated in churches in the communities where she lived. She collectively taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for more than 50 years. She served as chairman for a church service group for many years, and from 1984 through 2004 she managed the church-owned Adams Apartments in Missouri Valley.

‘ She was an avid gardener, planting large gardens well into her 70s. She especially enjoyed her flower gardens. Upon moving to Missouri Valley in 1996, she could often be seen outside in her gardens and maintaining her yard.

Though not formally employed as a teacher after her marriage, she practiced a lifelong love of teaching, serving as a 4-H leader for 20 years. She also tutored local students. She shared her love of music through solos at weddings and many funerals. Mr. and Mrs. Meyer’s love of dancing took them to many different communities to enjoy live band music and the many friends they made while dancing. They danced as often as possible until her husband’s death in 1994.

Mrs. Meyer enjoyed being involved with community activities and events. She was a member of the JHM Club, Federated Women’s Club, Harrison County Republican Women, the Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she served in many offices, including president, and was superintendent of the textiles department at the Harrison County Fair for many years. She was a fixture at the 4-H apple pie auction, often taking home honors for the grand champion pie.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Rozanne and Karol King of Mondamin and Julene Meyer and Richard Figiluzzi of Fort Collins, Colo.; two granddaughters; sisters-in-law, Maxine Wallis and Ardyce Meyer; many nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Willard, Johnny, Gerald, and Estal; sisters, Wilma Gochenour, Bernita Lewis and Vernice Chizek.

Memorials are suggested to the Missouri Valley Christian Church, the Alice Wallis Meyer scholarship at Nebraska Christian College or the Harrison County r-H Endowment.
