Leighton “ Fat” Ballinger, age 89, of Blair, NE. Survived by 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Dean Erickson, of Blair, Janet and Ivar Bomberg, of Plattsmouth; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Elaine Rhoades, Lincoln, NE; sister Daisy Hill, Nebraska City, NE.

Graveside memorial service 11am Wed, Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Plattsmouth. Memorial to Family’s choice. No Visitation.

Leighton R. Ballinger, 89

Leighton R. Ballinger of Blair, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha. Graveside services were Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Plattsmouth with military honors provided by VFW Post 32543 of Plattsmouth.

Leighton Russell Ballinger was born Feb. 21, 1916, in Thurman, Iowa, to Harvey Allen and Daisy Ethel (Carnes) Ballinger.

He served in the United States Army from September 1942 until December 1945.

On Sept. 4, 1947, he married Madeline Wiles in Papillion. The couple made their home in Plattsmouth.

Mr. Ballinger worked for many years as a carpenter, including several years with Peter Kiewit and Sons. After his wife’s death in 1977, he moved to Cumberland, Iowa, to be closer to his daughter and her family.

He moved with his family to Blair in 1985. After several years of living on his own, he moved into Carter House Assisted Living in 2003. He found great enjoyment living there, as the staff treated him like family.

Throughout his life, he thrived on being outside and reveled in hunting and fishing with his brothers and friends, going mushroom hunting and doing anything that would allow him to be in the outdoors. He also enjoyed playing cards, going camping, building things and taking on the role of “supervisor” on all kinds of projects with his son- in-law.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dean Erickson of Blair; step-daughter and husband, Janet and lvar Bomberg of Plattsmouth; stepdaughter-in-law, Elaine Rhoades of Lincoln; sister, Daisy Hill of Nebraska City; four grandchildren and their spouses; two step-grandchildren and their spouses; two great-grandchildren; five step-great-grand-children; and other family and friends.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Cecil, Howard, Harvey, Harold, Clayton and Wilber Glen; sisters, Nellie Evans, Ollie Wolkins, OlaMay Lee; and a stepson, Donald Rhoades.
