Former Countian Dies in Fremont

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 9, at Salem Lutheran Church for Mark D. Baltz, 28, of Fremont who died March 5, 1983.

The Rev. Dr. J.W. Berry conducted the services. Burial with a United States flag presentation by the American Legion Post 20 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 was in Ridge Cemetery.

Mark D. Baltz was born December 8, 1954, in Fremont. He lived in Nickerson as a young child, attended Fremont schools and graduated from Fremont High School in 1971.

He served in the United States Navy from 1973 to 1976 and had attended Midland Lutheran College and Metro Tech Community College in Omaha. He was a magician who entertained at various area functions. He died of a gunshot wound to the head. His body was found at the Fremont State Lakes Recreation Area.

He married Corliss “Corky” Guern Berkowitz on December 21, 1981. She survives.

Other survivors include two step-daughters, Tracy and Michelle Berkowitz; a stepson, Philip; his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence (Darlene) Ayers of Ames; and his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Warren (Doris) Baltz of Fremont. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Severyn of Fremont; sisters, Connie Duberstein of Fremont and Mrs. David (Lisa) Krist of Dumfries, Virginia: brothers, Fred of Dos Moines, Iowa, and Richard; and two step-brothers, Don Bennett of Waterloo and Jerry Bennett of Tacoma, Washington, also survive him.

Ludvigsen Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
