Margaret A. Barkley, 83

Margaret A. Barkley, 83, of Yankton, S.D., died Monday, Sept. 24, 2007, at Avera Yankton Care Center in Yankton.

Funeral services were Thursday, Sept, 27, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton. Interment was in the ZCBJ Cemetery in Wagner, S.D.

Margaret Andrea Berg was born Dec.18, 1923, to Hans and Mathilda (Dybdal) Berg in Belden. She was baptized in the Danish Lutheran Church in Laurel in April 1924. She attended Belden Public School, graduating in May 1941. She attended Dana College in Blair, where she received her stenographers’ certificate. During this time she was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Blair in April 1942.

After college, she was employed at Kreger’s, Armour & Company, and Johnson Biscuit, all in Sioux City, Iowa. She returned to Belden where she was employed at Westrope & Company until her marriage to Earl Barkley on Feb. 26, 1948, in Vermillion, S.D. They farmed near Ravinia, S.D., for 34 years until her husband’s death in 1980.

Mrs. Barkley was a pianist at the Union Church in Belden and the East Lake Andes Lutheran Church in rural Armour, S.D. She moved to Yankton in September 1982, where she became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

While in Yankton, she was employed at The Evergreen and Goodwill Industries. She also volunteered as an escort and waiting room hostess at Sacred Heart Hospital. She was involved in prison fellowship at the Federal Prison Camp and volunteered in the greeting card room and played the keyboard for chapel services for many years. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards, working crossword puzzles, and music, which was the joy of her life.

She is survived by her five children and their families: Roger Barkley of Ravinia, S.D., Janice, and fiancé Gaylord Olson, of Yankton, Jean Ann Barkley of Yankton, Bruce and Mary Barkley of Blair, and Dennis and Sandy Barkley of Irene, S.D; 10 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; sister- in-law, Lucile Kyle of Sioux City, Iowa; brother-in-law, Raymond (Lois) Barkley of Ravinia; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a half-brother, Pete Berg; and half-sister, Mary Webster.
