Richard G. Barnard

Richard G. “Dick” Barnard, 66, of Tekamah, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha. Funeral services were Thursday, Jan. 12, at the Herman Legion Hall. Interment was in the Herman Cemetery.

Richard G. Barnard was born April 18, 1939, in Hamburg, Iowa, to Richard L. and Mayme Loah (Risdon) Barnard. He graduated from high school in 1957 at Puyallup, Wash. He attended the University of Washington at Seattle and graduated in 1963 from the University of Puget Sound at Tacoma, Wash.

On Dec. 31, 1961, he married Janice Magill in Fremont.

After moving back to Nebraska, Mr. Barnard worked for Mutual of Omaha for 33 years, retiring in January 1996. At the time of his retirement, he was vice president of computer data services.

After retiring, Mr. Barnard devoted full time attention to his registered Texas Longhorn business, the Herman Community Church and his family.

He was past president of the Nebraska Texas Longhorn Association; regional director of the National Texas Longhorn Association of America, and was active in the Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow in Nebraska. He had several grand champion Longhorns and loved to show them.

He was a life member of the Omaha Jaycees, service at the state and local levels as vice president and chaplain. He was past Master of the Herman Lodge No. 222, past Patron of the Herman Order of the Eastern Star No. 216. He enjoyed being grand companion to his wife, Jan, traveling with the Eastern Star Grand Officers. He was also past president of the Mo-Ri Shrine.

He served the Herman Community Church in many capacities, and especially enjoyed his position as visitation specialist. His passion, however, was the development of the new congregation and lastly, the new church building.

He also used his talent to bring comfort to families, singing at several funerals over the years.

He is survived by his wife, Jan, and daughter, Deanna Barnard, both of Tekamah; sons and daughter-in-law, Bruce of Fremont, Mark and Linda of Herman; four grandsons; mother, Mayme Stanfield of Omaha; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Sharilyn Scroggins and Judy and Jim Beedle, all of Omaha; and a brother, Jack of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard L. Barnard; brother-in-law, Dr. John Allely; and nephew, Spc. 4 Kirk Magill.

Memorials are suggested to the Herman Community Church Building Fund.
