Services for Dallas Gene Christensen, 60, who died at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa April 19, 1996, were Tuesday, April 23 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. Rev. LeVern Nielsen officiated. Burial was in the Ebenezer Lutheran Cemetery east of Audubon.

Dallas Gene Christensen was born August 16, 1935 in Oakland Township near Brayton, Iowa to Nels Christian and Anna Marie Lund Christensen. He was baptized at Oakhill Lutheran Church and confirmed at the Exira Lutheran Church. He attended rural schools near Exira and graduated from Exira High School in 1955.

He enlisted in the United States Army May 5, 1955 and was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Exira.

He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad as a cook, traveling across Iowa for a short time and then worked for C. E. Erickson in Des Moines. He also worked at Emmert Manufacturing in Audubon; Western Iowa Pork Plant in Harlan and as a certified nurses aide at the Friendship Home in Audubon until retiring due to failing health. He became a resident of the home in March, 1987.

He was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church and had served on the church council.

He married Doris Marie Andersen at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon September 18, 1960.

He was preceded in death by his father; four infant brothers; his sister, Erma W. Jensen; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Lacy Andersen; a brother-in-law, Dale Rutherford and a nephew, Matthew Christensen.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Marie of Audubon; his children and their spouses, Donna and Dr. John Thomas of Papillion, Nebraska; Diane and Rev. James “Jim” Wakelin of Atlantic, Iowa; Dalton and Marcia Greunke Christensen of Audubon; Duane and Kristle Christensen of Utica, South Dakota; his grandchildren, Brandon Thomas, Jason Thomas, Jessica Wakelin, Stephen Wakelin, Amanda Wakelin; Dakota Christensen, Anna M. Christensen; sisters and brothers and their spouses, Dorothy and Don Lebeck of Audubon; Robert A. and Maralyn Christensen of Cherokee, Iowa; Lois and Tom Pfeiffer of Bremerton, Washington; Marjorie and Galen Hansen of Exira; and Violet and Jim Rush of Atlantic; his father-in-law, Ed. K. Andersen of Audubon; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert Jensen of Audubon; Esther Rutherford of Harlan and John E, and Sandy Andersen of Hiawatha, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Casket bearers were Robert Huff, Jerry Jensen, Earl Lauritsen, Robert Nelson, Darwin Nissen, Jack Peppers and Richard “Dick” Petersen.

Honorary casket bearers were Robert A. Christensen, Dr. J. M. Cunningham, Rev. Dick Dahle, V. G. Englin, James Perkins, Rev. David Scherer and Deane St. Peter.

Kessler Funeral Homes in Audubon were in charge of arrangements.
