In 1942, he began employment with Farmers Union Coop Creamery, where he was head butter maker for a number of years. He transferred to Fremont in 1959 and was superintendent until moving to Norfolk in 1969, where he was a mechanic for 13 years. He retired in 1982 from Mid-American Dairymen, ending his 40-year career in the dairy business, and returned to Fremont.
