FIND CORPSE TIED TO TREE

Word was telephoned to Coroner Pierce from Calhoun last Wednesday that the body of a man had been found on a high bluff between DeSoto and Calhoun by William Prochnow, and upon investigation it was found that the man had been dead at least six months, the body being clothed in heavy winter underwear, a gray suit with dark stripe, blue calico shirt and green cloth hat.

It was at first thought it was case of suicide, as a Colt’s revolver with one empty chamber was found clutched in the right hand and the left hand tied to a tree, presumably to keep the body from rolling down the bluff. But after bringing the body back to Blair no marks were found to indicate that the man had shot himself, and no holes could be found in the underwear from the shoulders down.

In the mouth of the dead man were a number of gold crowned teeth and some bridge work, and with the body was an open face watch, a cartridge belt and holster, half a bottle of peroxide, a half bottle of whiskey, a pipe, smoking tobacco and a hair brush and comb. Some papers were also found in the clothing bearing names and addresses of several parties, to all of whom Coroner Pierce has written, but up to the present time nothing that would disclose the identity of the dead man has been learned. Coroner Pierce and Sheriff Compton both claim that it would be impossible for a man to tie himself to a tree in the manner this man was tied and they are of the opinion that there has been foul play and the remains were placed where found for the sake of covering up some crime.

The body is being held at Coroner Pierce’s undertaking rooms in the hope that some clue may be obtained as to the identity of the dead man and from that unravel the mystery that seems to surround his death.

MAN IDENTIFIED

From information obtained by writing to parties whose names were found among the papers on the body of the man found down near Calhoun a few weeks ago, Coroner Pierce has obtained the information that the fellow’s name was undoubtedly Louis Trowbridge, and was a former resident of Tabor, Iowa. According to information received, the fellow went by the name of Seeley. Trowbridge was well-to-do at one time, but had of late been to Mexico. The theory that the man was murdered is still held by Coroner Pierce, and efforts will now be made to unravel the mystery of his death.

A Mrs. W. R. Campbell was here from Fremont last week and claimed the body to be that of her husband, but her brother-in-law failed to see the resemblance and Coroner Pierce refused to deliver the remains to her.
