Roger D. Nelson, 64

Services were Monday, Feb. 3 at Immanuel Zion Lutheran Church in rural Albion for Roger D. Nelson, 64, who died Jan. 31, 1997 at his Albion home from a heart attack. Rev. Larry Spomer officiated. Burial was in the Immanuel-Zion Cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 162 and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 736.

Roger Nelson was born February 4, 1932 in Albion to William A. and Edith Loken Nelson. He graduated from Albion High School in 1949.

In March of 1953, he entered the Army and was stationed in Germany until his discharge in 1955. In 1956, he married Kathryn I. Clipston in Albion. They farmed northeast of Albion.

He also worked as a security officer for Albion Public Schools and was a part-time officer for the Albion and St. Edward Police departments for several years. Recently he was a distributor for Heartland Delivery.

In addition to being a lifelong member of Immanuel-Zion Lutheran Church, he served on the church council and was a member of the Men’s Bible Study Group. He served as a school board member in rural Albion and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 162 of Albion. He served on the Boone County Soil and Water Conservation Board and the Farmers Union co-op Board.

He was preceded in death by his father, William, in 1981.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; one daughter and son-in-law, Karla and Dr. David Rohwer of Omaha; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Kay and Rod and Peggy, all of Albion and Ritch and Kara of Alliance; his mother, Edith Nelson of Albion; eight grandchildren, Brynn Nelson, Alicia and Chris Schmeits, Taylor Nelson, Mandy Rohwer, Heather Rohwer, James Rohwer and Jonathan Rohwer; one sister and brother-in-law, Dale and Gail Clipston of Norfolk; nephews and their spouses, Steve and Sandy Stone of Blair and Dave and Brenda Stone of Millard, a niece and her husband, Sherrie and Dave Gordon of St Louis, Mo. and many other relatives and friends.
