Howard L. Christensen, 88, of Bennington, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Immanuel Hospital, after battling illness for some time. Services were Friday, March 17, 2000, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington. Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park in Omaha.

Howard Leslie Christensen was born June 7, 1911, to George M. and Annie (Pate) Christensen, on the family farm in Washington County.

He attended the Rispin Rural School in Washington County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church at the age of 33.

On March 14, 1934, he married Ruberta Dornacker on the family farm in Washington County. He worked for Buck Johnson in Washington driving truck for two years and for Al Sibbersen as a farmhand for six years. In 1942, he and his wife moved to the farm at Elkhorn and later moved southeast of Bennington, where they farmed until moving into Bennington in 1979.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church on Bennington; the Keenagers; he served on the school board; the rural fire department; was a 4-H leader; and served on the Grange at one time.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling to various parts of the county and spent several winters in Arizona.

He enjoyed his family most of all, but also enjoyed visiting with friends, playing cards and nature. He always took in the changing of the seasons and would remark about the beauty of the trees turning green in the spring and the changing of the colors in the fall. He loved watching wildlife and cattle were very important to him. He believed that the livestock should have breakfast before he did.

He was a man of faith. He and his wife were always to be found in church on Sunday, unless they were ill.

He is survived by his wife, Ruberta; three daughters and sons-in-law, Doreen and Elmer Nelson of Gretna, Carole and Daryl Cox of Omaha and Robin and Darryl Stimmel of Palm Harbor, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Violet Christensen of Omaha; sisters, Hazel Gregerson and Ruby Chapman, both of Blair; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
