George W. Tyson, 72, of Herman, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006 at Memorial Community Hospital. He was surrounded by his family as he succumbed to a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the Herman Legion Hall. Interment will be in the Herman Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

George William Tyson was born June 16, 1934, in Tekamah to Ned and Irma Tyson. He grew up in Herman and graduated from Herman High School in 1952.

He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he studied agricultural science for two years. While at UNL, he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He met Nancy Jane Koehler while attending the university; the couple was married Oct. 25, 1954 in Geneva.

In that same year, Mr. Tyson went into business with his father and started the first liquid fertilizer plant west of the Mississippi River, which was a huge innovation for growing crops. He bought the company from his father, Ned Tyson and brother, Tom, and then put retail plants in Herman, Tekamah, Arlington, Blair, Decatur and Bertha.

Continuing with the pioneering spirit, he tested many fertilizers for Allied Chemical Company and many of these help the farmers of today. He was president of the Nebraska Fertilizer Institute (NFI) from 1963 to 1964. In 1964, he was also elected to the board of directors for the National Fertilizers Solutions Association (NFSA), on which he served through 1967. Along with the NFI and NFSA, he was on countless panels to promote the advantages and uses of liquid fertilizers.

He was a past member of the Blair Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Elks Club of Omaha, and the Blair Rotary Club. During these years, he received a license for a twin-engine airplane and became a private pilot. In 1981, he sold the liquid fertilizer plant and LP gas business to Bob Warren and Eddie Prussa; the company is now recognized as P & W Ag Inc. Mr. Tyson also owned Tyson Elevator in Blair for more than 25 years.

One of his fondest memories was spending time on the farm with his Grandma Abby Conety. This is when he learned of his love for the land. He had three loves - - his family, agriculture, and his cottage on the beautiful Lake of the Woods in Canada.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Jane; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Sue and Keith Paar of Blair; son and daughter-in-law, John and Elizabeth Tyson of Herman; four grandsons; sisters, Susan Van Horn of Omaha and Nancy Jo Axtell of Elkhorn; sister-in-law Sandra Tyson Scott of Leander, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Tom; and a brother-in-law, Doug Axtell.

Memorials are suggested to the Herman Fire and Rescue Squad or the Blair Rescue Squad.
