The remains of Mrs. Susan E. Smith were brought here from Lincoln Monday morning and buried by the side of her husband in the Blair cemetery. She died of arterio-sclerosis at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Cara Beachy, on Sunday, Feb. 20th. Deceased was born in Miami county, Ohio, March 22nd, 1834, and was therefore almost 82 years of age at the time of her death. She was married there to L.B. Smith on the 30th day of August, 1857, and they came to Blair in 1870. Eleven children were born to them, five of whom are now living: James M. of Lyons, Wallace and Louise, of Fremont, Willie, of Bellevue and Mrs. Cara Beachy, of Lincoln. Mr. Smith died at the soldier’s home at Burkett, Neb. six years ago.

Mrs. Susan E. Smith Passes Away. Died at Lincoln, Buried in Blair, Her Old Home

Residents of two score and more years ago and subsequent years remember the Lewis B. Smith family, who built and occupied the house on South street, later owned and occupied by Peter Gilbertson, deceased, and family, now owned and occupied by “Butch” Cook. Smith was janitor of the schools for many years and best known as “Janitor” Smith, on account of his occupation. The remains of Mrs. Smith were brought here on Monday and buried in the Blair cemetery, Rev. Mr. Foreman, of the Baptist church, holding brief service at the grave.

The Lincoln State Journal of the 21st Inst. Has the following notice of her death:

“Mrs. Susan E. Smith, eighty-two years old, died at her home, 1738 M. street, at 4:20 a.m. Sunday. She had been a resident of Nebraska for nearly fifty years. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Cara S Beachey, of Lincoln, and four sons, James M., of Lyons, Wallace M. and Lewis K. of Fremont, and William J. of Bellevue. The body will be taken to the old home at Blair Monday morning. Funeral services and burial will be from that place Monday noon. The deceased was the widow of Lewis B. Smith, who died at Burkett, Nebraska, in 1910. In 1870 she arrived with her husband in Blair, where she resided until the death of her husband, when she moved to Lincoln. She was born in Champagne county, Ohio, March 22, 1834. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.”
